Social Security Number (NISS) in Portugal

To obtain a Social Security Number (NISS) in Portugal, it is required after obtaining your NIF. The NISS is used to pay Social Security Contributions to the government, which is based on the nature of work in Portugal.

For those with a work permit, the contribution is 11% by the individual and 23.75% by the employer. For self-employed individuals, it is 21% of their average quarter income. If you own a company, the contribution is 34.75% by the owner. Employers must apply for the NISS of their employees and contribute to the government based on their base salary, while self-employed individuals and company owners must contribute based on their monthly income.

The NISS is only obtained by a company owner after the company has been activated on the Finance and Social Security Portal. As of January 2020, the process of obtaining a NISS has been made faster, with work contracts and self-employed personnel able to obtain it immediately after submitting their documents at the desk.

To apply, you will need a valid passport, Schengen visa, NIF, and the required documents such as an employment contract or self-employed activity form or company formation document, along with a completed form that corresponds to the nature of work. A Schengen visa sticker and entry are mandatory for obtaining a NISS.
