Family Reunification of Portugal Citizen/Residency Card Holder for Portugal

Non-European citizens who have relatives living in Portugal with permanent or provisional residence permits can apply for a family visa to join them. This includes spouses, dependent children, parents, adopted children, and siblings. If the family member or spouse living in Portugal holds a temporary residence permit, the family reunification visa will also be valid for the same duration.

Spouses of Long-term residence permit holders who have been married for more than five years will receive an independent residence permit and will have the same rights as Portuguese citizens in terms of employment, education, social security, taxes, and healthcare.

To apply for a family reunification visa, the person holding a Portuguese residence permit must schedule an appointment with the AIMA and request a Family Reunification Document. The required documents for the application include proof of residence permit, recent color photos with a blank background, proof of relationship with the family members, copies of passports and ID cards of family members, proof of accommodation and funds, tax documents, criminal record certificates, adoption certificates (if applicable), birth certificates, proof of children’s education, certificate of legal guardianship for minor siblings, and a marriage certificate.

After the Family Reunification Document is approved, each family member will be able to apply for a D6 (Family Reunification) visa. The AIMA will inform the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Portuguese embassy or consulate in the applicant’s home country.
