Universities in Portugal

Portugal’s education system is managed by the state and accredited by both state universities and individual organizations. There are also independent institutions that offer a wide range of education. Some of the well-known universities in Portugal include the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, the Institute Polytechnic de Leiria, and the University de Lisboa.

Admission to Portuguese universities usually takes place twice a year, with April to August being the admission period for September intake and October to January for February intake.

International students have the right to study in Portugal and have individual quota seats. However, primary education in government schools is free, but higher and vocational education at the university level may incur fees ranging from 5,000-7,000 euros per year.

To get admission to a Portuguese university, an applicant must have completed at least 12 years of schooling and have a good command of either English or Portuguese. Many Portuguese universities offer courses in both Portuguese and English.

International students must take and pass the IELTS test to study in Portugal. The acceptance of study gaps varies depending on the university’s criteria.

To obtain a student visa in Portugal, applicants must have confirmed enrollment from a registered institute in Portugal and demonstrate their financial stability and intention to study. International students who are pursuing higher education may also apply for temporary residency in Portugal.
