Residency (Registration Certificate) for European Citizen And Their Families

European Union, EEA, Andorra, and Switzerland nationals and their families can enter and stay in Portugal for up to 90 days without a visa. If they wish to stay for more than 90 days, they must obtain a “Registration Certificate” that is valid for five years. The following is a step-by-step guide to obtaining this certificate:

  • Book an appointment with the municipal council - EU, EEA, Andorra, and Switzerland nationals should book an appointment with the local municipal council to register for a certificate.
  • Prepare required documents - Bring the following documents to the appointment: European passport or identity card, Portuguese tax number, proof of Portuguese accommodation, Portuguese bank account, activity proof (if required), relationship documents, and proof of professional and financial stability.
  • Establish a connection with Portugal - Before applying for a visa or residence, demonstrate a professional and financial connection to Portugal.
  • Collect the certificate - The certificate will be physically handed over during the appointment and will be valid for the next five years.
  • Residence card for EU-national's families - EU law requires that Portugal protect the families of EU nationals, and family members who are non-EU nationals can apply for a residence card at the AIMA office (Immigration Services Portugal). This includes spouses, dependent children, and parents.
